Christmas is the day of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. This day is celebrated on the 25Th of December as well as on the evening before, the 24th of December. Worldwide this day is celebrated by all Christians. The way of celebrating this very important day, varies between the counties. In Germany it is the most important Day of the year which need exactly one month of preparation.
The 24 days before Christmas are called the pre-Christmas period. This period starts on the 1st advent, on the 1st Sunday in December. People will start decorating their houses with chains of light, also called fairy lights, which completely changes the atmosphere inside and outside and everything looks bright and cozy.
Every Advent on the Sunday one new candle (there are 4 candles in total) is lighted and it is tradition to stay with the family and bake, have tea time, play games and enjoy the day in harmony.
The children will write on the first advent a letter with all the wishes they have and will also get a calendar with 24 “doors” which re opened day after day until Christmas, bringing them everyday a little something. After the Children opened the 23ed door of the calendar the whole family will choose a Christmas tree, which gets decorated together with the crib, stars and wooden angel in different colures and shapes.
On the 24th all shops are closed and everyone stays at home until everyone gathers around the Christmas tree where everyone singes Christmas songs. After the singing the presents are distributed which apparently come from the “Christ kind” and the whole family will have dinner together.
I personally think it is Christmas has nothing to do with religion anymore but serves something different. People become friendlier around these days and people spend more time with their family in harmony then usually. The way I described Christmas is how i and many other German families celebrate it.
